Help, I just installed a new hard drive to a compaq presario 1621 laptop: everything has gone smoothly, loaded win98, modem, nic, audio, video, applications, anti-virus, etc. Only ONE problem, and I don't understand it: when I restart, I have no problems. When I COLD boot, the display reverts to 16 colors, even though it says the drivers are loaded (both a Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA) and a Laptop Display (600x800)by NeoMagic.) As soon as I restart it, the proper display shows. As soon as I cold reboot it again, it doesn't. PLEASE SOMEONE TELL ME WHY!! It's driving me crazy, I have looked at a million settings including in system.ini and nothing seems to make a difference. What am I missing? |

Hello rebootd,
First, sounds like a driver reinstall is needed, best bet is to boot in safe mode and delete any and all video drivers that windows may have loaded on install You may have more than one listed and on cold start windows 98 doesn't know which one to use so it uses a general driver that works with any video. I found a more recent driver at http://www.compaq.com/support/files/codrus.html for Neomagic you may want to try it if windows isn't able to locate another functional driver when you reboot from safe mode.
