We have an IBM Aptiva 2153/E3U with an integrated ATI Rage Pro graphics card we are trying to disable. We have purchased a new Voodoo3 3000 PCI card that only worked once-it was great. When the new card is installed, and we try to start the computer, we get 1 of 2 error messages. One message says Windows can't start because the VMM32.VXD was not found or is damaged. The other message says a device file in the system.ini file is damaged. If we pull out the Voodoo card, everything starts up fine.

Get rid of Windows???? Please? So from what I gather you actually had the Voodoo card installed and windows booted up? If so, you might just want to replace the VMM32.VXD file. Since I detest M$ products, I can't really tell you exactly how to do this. But usually windows installs files called .cab. They contain all the drivers that came on the install disk.
Now if you are serious about disabling your onboard display adapter, you are going to have to play in your BIOS. Daunting task, I know. There is usually a place in the BIOS to disable onboard components. If you post what Motherboard you have and the BIOS it is using (including version), I or someone else can probably give you fairly precise instructions on what steps to take. That is if you want someone to hold your hand doing this. |

I would presume you disable it in the BIOS as noted above although sometimes it is jumpered on the motherboard. Persevere. The Voodoo3 is worth it. What version of Windows are you running. I know SE has a utility called SFC (System File Checker) that can replace damaged system files.

Don't forget to disable Monitor Control Panel if you are running W98.

Some motherboards -- the FIC KA11 comes to mind -- will not allow you to disable the integrated chips, in BIOS or otherwise. |
