There is really only one true way to do this. No cheating the system. Run your scandisk from dos. Then type scandisk/all or scandisk/all/surface for the real deal. when these have finished, type win. This will put you back in windows. Immideately run derag and let it do its thing. It should run without scandisk now. If defrag still has problmes, set your computer so that not a single autowrite system is being used (like virus checkers, updates, e-mails, etc.).
then repeat the process.

if you run xp or 2000( unfamilliar with nt) don't worry about it cause all you have to do is right click on c drive and then click on properties>tools>check disk. Follow the same steps from here.
