Hello all,
Just wondering about index.dat file. Its something stored in my cookies and when i go to clear cookies all are deleted except the index.dat file.

The message comes up "cannot delete index.dat access denied"

Recently i received an ad about stopping hackers getting through your pc...

Apparently even though we clear cookies and delete our history trail...hackers can still get in via that index.dat file

The advertisement and purchasing a certain product apparently will take care of it. Is there a way to delete it without purchasing programs?
Any help much appreciated,
thanks,

rosie

There is a very detailed thread, in this same catagory, titled "Deleting Temporary Files" that deals with this question rather well. It is a very long thread but the information is well worth it so take a look.

thanks brent,
am not sure if i found it...i did have a look around. I was just wondering if there is a way to delete index.dat file without having to go into dos (whatever that is :) excuse my computer ignorance)

i dont want to tamper with these settings here and then found i have done major damage. Why cant we just right click on it and choose delete without it coming up with "access denied" comment...

thanks anyway,
rosie

I tried to delete or empty index.dat too ... even using dos ... but even dos would not let me delete it or rename it .... I noticed those evidence eliminator and cleansweep programs can do it but I don't want to pay $99 just to clean up my index.dat file. Any quick answers on how to do this?

if you go into dos. and delete it, it gets recreated upon reboot using whatever cookies are currently stored on your system. i use dos safe mode myself to delete it, since it's a system file and cannot be deleted while in windows since it's being used at that time. try to delete all cookies in the cookies folder and the temporary internet files folder, then shutdown and reboot to dos safe mode and type "del c:\windows\cookies\index.dat" upon which a confirmation will come up which it asks are you sure, and you press Y, then reboot.

that will delete all cookies and then when the index.dat file is recreated, it will have no cookies to import for a list.

I installed Norton SystemWorks 2003 on my new pc with WinXP. It has a utility called Wipeinfo so I opened it up and dragged my Temp, History and Cookie IE5 index dat files to it and deleted them. No more dat files.
Will these missing dat files have any operational consequences?
When I delete temp files in the future will they truly be deleted or, lacking the dat files as a destination, be stored elsewhere?

If you have win98 their is a free program that will clean off the 5 or 6 index.dat files that M$ tries to hide, that index.dat shows every URL you computer has been too, this programs erases all that data and in the other hidden .dat files as well. If needed shoot me an email - Subject - Dat files...so i don't delete the email.

This works on WIN 9x and ME haven't tried on XP yet. Go to your 'Temporary Internet Files' folder open 'Content.iex' ..delete contents, rename it. Open 'cookies' folder, delete contents then rename it. Reboot. Windows will re-create the renamed folders with new index.dat files. then just delete the folders you renamed. you are stuck with the index.dat files but it is good to know you can empty their contents easily without buying expensive cleaning programs

Hey guess what,
I got the same problem and I heard some where that if you delete your Temporary Internet Files, your Cookies and your history files, your computer still has a trace of all those files in a special place called the index.dat. I tried using the Search Engine and found like 12 index.dat files.

Now I'm not saying you should delete those but consult with a computer proffesional before you try anything which involves with system files, so that u do not accidentally damage your computer software.
Thanx for reading.

We have a computer with Windows xp virtual memory is so low it can't run any programs, could this be due to temp.internet files or is there something else to look at.

Spyware running in the back ground more than likely, or not enough memory (128MB or less usually)for the operating system after load. 256 MB would be the bare minimum I would run XP on and that would be so painful I would have to get up and leave.

One way to get rid of .DAT files (History, temp Internet and index) if you are an XP user, without using Dos is to go into control panel, select user accounts, create a new user with admin privileges. Then log out and log back in as the new user. Now you can delete the files. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\* your user name*\local settings, from there you will be able to find all those pesky .dats. To find the local settings folder you will have to go into tools\folder options\view and select show hidden files. Hope that helps;)

One more thing, don't, whatever you do delete the NTuser file, windows needs that.

Most of the threads I have read on this issue don't address the fact that copies of index.dat are stored in deep hidden directories off of the main History, Tempor~1(whatever) and other folders where it is found.

You need to delete the whole IE root folders where the index.dat files reside in order to get all the unseen directories and below. This essentially causes IE to build fresh ones automatically. I do this by booting into dos and use the command DELTREE to cut off all these branches but you have to use the short DOS names for these directorys. This works for win32 but not for NTFS. Thanks bigbob. It's a good idea to always log in with a disposable account to keep your Admin login uncluttered.

There are other files that track you too. If you are carefull with registry, do a search for "http" and see what pops out. Also, wmplib~1.db and MRUs can get extensive, bogging things down.

This is a way to remove the index.dat file on XP systems. The files, however, will come back, when they do come back they will be cleared of all data. Boot your computer up in Safe-Mode, When you get to the LOGIN screen click ADMINISTRATOR, right when the screen turns to boot up press: CTRL+ALT+DELETE (before the message comes up telling you that you are in Safe-Mode. Press New Task, and type: CMD once the command prompt appears type in the command prompt the following. cd\ then type: del index.dat/s Then close it. Now the above information may have to be repeated 2-3 times (re-boot your computer each time) Once that is complete go to RUN type: msconfig and click the NORMAL bubble and press OK then reboot! and your done! Good luck. Hope this helped!!!

Here is a real easy way to deleted some of the index.dat files. Move the folder.

The option is under Tools-InternetOptions-General-Settings-Move folder.

Move the folder where you want. I move between C:\ and C:\Windows. Then after a forced reboot, the old index.dat file is erased and replaced with on that is 32k.

BTW, index.dat will always be replaced. If Windows see it is missing it starts a new one.
