I have two Dell Latitude XPi's, both of which were locked. There is a tool that will generate a master password from the Service Tag. Look for Latitude.zip or Latitude_MasterPW.exe. I found it in about two minutes with Google. Current location at 12/01/05 is http://www.p42.org/latitude.zip but I guess you'll have to hurry.

OK, The link to the password generator has gone, no suprise! I have put it on eDonkey 2000. The file you need to look for is 'Dell Latitude Master PW gen.exe'

I just bought a used IBM Thinkpad A21m w/ Windows 2000 Pro, at an auction. It didn't have a power cord, so I bought one on E-Bay. Now I can power it up, but it immediately asks for a password. Is there any way I can bypass or defeat this?

It worked for me. I had to tear the entire laptop apart. One post said the 24C02 chip was under the CPU, the other said it was under the PCMIA slots.

They meant it. There really is a '24C02' chip and if you short out pins 3 and 6, it works.

I've reset a lot of passwords in my lifetime, but none have been such a pain in the . I had to rip apart the entire laptop to do it. There is a lot more cat hair in there than previously. This worked for a C600. (It's on the other side of the PCMCIA slots and just below. Good luck taking the board apart-but-It Does Work, for the valiant!)

I wish you luck, but it's true. Find that chip (it'll be on the underside) but it exists. It's there. Good luck.

CB

PS, I used a paperclip and a steady hand. It's definately do-able.

Meaning, You have to rip apart the entire system, the RF sheild and flip it over. Instead of trying to solder anything, I drilled a hole through the metal (while covering the rest of it with a paper towel) so that I could use a paperclip.

It's not easy, but rest assured, on a C600, there is the 24C02 chip, and shorting pins 3 and 6 really did work. I'm not kidding. Anyways.

What a pain in the .

Thanks,

Dell fucks.

I have tried every possible thing i could think of including the 2 keygens, v1.0 and v2.2 and nothing. It's currently in several pieces acrossed my living room at the moment as i have had no luck finding any 8-pin chip with "24C02" on it. There is one that says

"Atmel 308

ST27 A"

on it. could that be it? i need some serious help... spent too much for this, especially if i can't get it runnin...

ok.. aparently my D500 has a "24u05" instead of a "24c02"... so now that i have determined where the pass is stored, which pins do i short? is it the same as the 24c02? i'd assume so , since i was told it should have the 24c02, so i'd figure it must conform to the same standards, or they'd have to redo the mobo, am i right?

so now the problem i am facing is which pins are numbers 1-8? I'd appreciate any help.. and i know www.dellpassword.net.ms may work, but it costs money, and i'm too cheap... so as soon as i get this done, and done right, i'll repost and tell ya's how i did it... for free of course... lol

If your Serial number ends in "-595" or "-595B", you will not be able to use the latitude.exe or MasterPassword.exe files to recover the master password. You must solder the eeprom replacement on.
onewattbulb
Posted on Thursday, May 26, 2005 - 11:58 am:

nope... you don't have to do that... just gotta jumper pin 3 and pin 6 on the "24c02", or "24u05", or the "24c164" or whatever chip resides in the location marked "upw1" (i think it stands for "unremovable password" lol) at least that's what it was on my D500... You really have to do some looking for it, mine was behind the PCMCIA slot.. only had to take the keyboard, one heatsink, and the pcmcia slot off.. then lift back the plastic, Carefully soldier wires to pin 3 and 6, then route them outside (i went through the fan opening), then put it all back together. then press the power button, short the wires for 2 seconds, then it "should" say "***Manufacturing Mode - Level [1]*** Press Fn-X to return to normal mode" then when you see this, press F2, after bios comes up, press ESC, choose "Save and exit" then reboot... if "manufacturing mode" still comes up press Fn-X and it will exit that mode. you may have to mess with it a few times, but don't leave the wires shorted for more than 2 seconds. "the first time i did it i got a overheating warning, and it was gonna be shut down.. don't worry bout that, you've come this far, try it again... it actually came up for me by doing the following
Step 1. press power.
Step 2. short wires 2 seconds.
Step 3. disconnect wires, wait 2 seconds.
Step 4. short wires again for 2 seconds,
Step 5. disconnect and wait for "Maintenance Mode" text.
Step 6. Hit F2
Step 7. Hit ESC, Choose save and exit
Step 8. Enjoy your unlocked Laptop (with NO service Tag)

ok... got that straigtened out.. but now it says "service Tag:Not Installed" in the bios, so it will not let you save a new admin or configure password, but you can lock the harddrive, so good enough. (i can just imagin that call to dell support. "What's the service tag number?", "It says 'not installed'", "WTF, How'd you do that????") LMFAOTIPMP

So if anybody knows how to set a service tag, or what other functions you could do from "Maintenance Mode Level 1", let me know at onewattbulb@hotmail.com

thanks

BTW, i was told from several sources that the security chip on a D500 latitude should be a "24c02" but it wasn't.. it was "24u05" so don't give up.. just keep looking for chips that start with 24, and you should be on the right track...

Steve... if you got as far as soldiering wires to the chip, i hope you didn't give up on it... the info i used to unlock my D500 was actually obtained from a page about the D600... so it is the same procedure.. fiddle with it a little bit.. i took me a few tries, but i give my word it does work...

The laptop i'm repairing is a dell c400, i soldered wires to pins 3 and 6 and can short them at will. problem is, after i short them the computer shuts off. if i hold the short and turn on the computer it refuses to start. as soon as the short is released the computer boots up into the grey screen password mode. pressing f keys doesnt do anything. i am quite certain i have soldered pins 3 and 6 - i started at 1 at the indented circle and counted counterclockwise.

Anybody have any ideas. the 24c02 on the mobo seems to be an atmel chip.
john
Posted on Thursday, June 16, 2005 - 7:56 am:

wow it worked. after much frustration doing the shorting voodoo and what not other schemes the laptop has finally booted up. i had to take a dump of the eeprom just as it was booting up.

i give all credit to passwort_unlock for this. he gave me the technique and schematic to do it.

p_u then told me the password from deciphering the eeprom dump. this might sound like a dodgy plug for p_u but i swear this is true. don't bother with the shorting method it may work but for me it was just a waste of time. just take the eeprom dump and decipher the password yourself or request someone with the know how to interperet the reading.

i typed this with what was until 30 mins ago an expensive paperweight.

John, PU, ANYONE! I have been trying for months now to bypass my pasword. I have a Insprion 7000. I think the chip is 24C164. I have not tried the sodering. Please tell me which process really works. I think I am cappable of doing the sodering but I would rather not take that risk if I dont have to. I don't want to spend any money either. I can't believe that this dell laptop is that difficult. I have seen answers to all types of laptops. I must be the only one that has a 7000. I will try anything but I really think that it is not as difficult as everyone makes it seem. Thanks in advance.

Hello

I think - I am not shure- the chip in D505 should be in the same place like in D600.
the chip should be located under PCMCIA (You must remove 2 screws and the PCMCIA slot) which is attached to the mother board..There is the black sticker (under that sticker should be the chip), and it's labbeled UPW1.
Good luck

If you have a HDD password as well as a BIOS password... And want to save the data on the hard drive then dont use the paperclip method... You will have to throw your HD in the bin.... Use p_u's method.. that will give you the BIOS password and allow you to boot your laptop up and change the HD password...

'nother correction, the chip is near the B ram slot.
the short method works in so far as you must permanently soldier a wire across the pins (3 and 6)
as far as I can tell this works without major problems ie. machine boots

removed removed the files btcdrom - readme.txt - setramd.bat off of the win 98 boot floppy that i created I then added the files asset.com - ee-cpb.exe - stag.exe - svctag.exe - svctag.inf from the nvram erase on to that same floppy drive then using nero express i asked it to make a bootable floppy. once finished the laptop booted up fine off the cd used svctag.exe to rewrite the service tag

hi to all-anyone know whats wrong with my DELL at boot it states loads of read/write expecting 00E1000 e.t.c but read 00E40000 style errors then says decreasing memory...sometimes just freezes at boot with error memory has changed ...if I hold down for a couple of seconds the power on/off button at boot then comes with first stated error. I flashed latest BIOS from dell but still same probs:-(

Just got a CPx in an auction, but it has a hard drive password. I can use a boot disk to see the bios, but it does not have any passwords enabled as far as I can tell. After enterin 3 wrong hard drive passwords, it reboots or boots from a CD-Rom. Anyone know how to get rid of the hard drive password? Paperclip work??

Hi, Its my friends Dell Latitude D600. Everything is working fine except the Wireless card and modem. When I went to the Bios Setup, I found that they had been turned off. There is no Admin or System password blocking except the "configuration password". Can anybody suggest what should we do? Any help will be highly appreciated.

herbietheferret, the chip is on top all you have to do is move the keyboard out of the way and remove the cd-rom, its just under the cd-rom tray on the right hand side.
took me a few tries but it works, strange thing is it left the service tag and wiped the asset tag

Posted on Wednesday, October 12, 2005 - 3:06 pm:

the site Qasimtoep made i think usually dunn work due to badwidth restrictions..

however he very kind enough to send me a zip file of the website about the dell latitude password..
My laptop was a Latitude Cpi-A, which is about the hardest one to work with since the actual password chip is directly under the CPU board.. meaning if u wanna get to the chip u gotta remove the cpu board, and duh, u cant start the computer like that... so what i had to do was very carefully solder two wires at the pins to be jumped - i used garbage twisties since theyre covered along their length, exposing only the two ends to be soldered... then i led the wires out so that i cud place the cpu board back on and still jump the pins after turning it on...surely enough it worked exactly as described.. removed the solder and re-assembled.. everything worked fine...

i think this password idea was the dumbest thing dell could think of,

This is probably repeated elswere on the page but may help:

There are 2 master password gens to help unlock your Dell laptop's BIOS. You will need the computer's service tag number.

Latitude.exe
Latitude_MasterPW.exe

Ive used on a latitude CPI D300XT D-35B model and it works. Apparently only works with the D-35B models.

Search on edonkey or www.DriverGuide.com (if you can put up with the lenghty registration process)for Latitude.zip (contains both the above files)

Following are posts from a few other sites:

If your service tag number ends in D-35B, be sure to type in all the characters that are displayed on the "enter password" screen, for example, "FAZNG**-D35B". You will have to use the Latitude Latitude_MasterPW.exe, because the older Latitude.exe only takes five characters.

I spent many hours combing the internet for info, taking the notebook apart (to reset the CMOS battery -- which is underneath the palmrest -- before I realized that would not work due to the NVRAM chip), etc., etc. So, FYI to anyone who is interested, the Latitude_MasterPW.exe -- which only works with the tag ending in D-35B -- will give you not only a Primary (User) Password, but will also unlock the HDD if you type in those characters exactly as they appear on the "HDD Password Enter" screen. When I typed in the HDD Password, it permanently disabled the hard drive password. Unfortunately, once I got into the BIOS I was unable to change any settings because an Administrator password had been typed in (Administrator can disable the BIOS, which they had). After some more web surfing, I finally discovered that you have to enter the Primary Password (the Master obtained from LatitudePW.exe) and then, rather than just striking Enter, hold the Control button down while striking the Enter key twice. That wiped both the Primary and Administrator Passwords at once, which also enabled the BIOS configuration.

******

Q
Thanks for your reply That was the version of the program I was looking for. However I ran into another problem. The master password doesn't work even if I hold control and press enter twice. The password screen says "This computer system, #6GBEN**-D35B, is protected by a password authentication system." I don't know why the * characters are inserted there as everybody else's examples had complete service tag numbers. Entering that into the program gives an Invalid Input error and entering just 6GBEN gives me a password that doesn't work. Anything I'm missing?

A
I think you may be entering the # sign. That is not part of the password, but all the rest of the characters are. If you just enter 6GBEN it will give you a Master password, but it won't work. Enter 6GBEN**-D35B and you should get a Master (Primary) password that reads: qb80eycj. When you type it in the first time, I would suggest that you only strike the Enter key (don't hold down control), because if you have a Hard Drive lock password, that screen will come up next. Then you can enter the HDD service tag that's displayed on the screen into Latitude_MasterPW.exe, and it will give you the Hard Drive Master Password. The HDD Master password will permanently disable the password and unlock your hard drive (I suppose you could enter a new one later). The Master (Primary) password will have to be entered each time, until you do the Control/Enter thing to completely clear it.

yes, i did get it sorted... running asset.com /s ##### from true dos did the trick...

Before trying the shorting method you must realize that if a HD password is set, you may lose the drive... but if you have access to a deguasing machine, as p_u mentioned, you can still save it... otherwise you'll need to replace the HD...

keep up the great work guys.... btw, i'm selling my d500... anyone interested? lemme know

***** latitude owners *****

there is no way to obtain the password, through software.. ive tried them all and they dont work..

however Jumping the 24C02 chip DOES WORK.. it completely removes the lock feature, i tried exactly according to Qasimtoep's instructions (when his site was up).. if you're very careful, then its very easy to do...

Mike, check to see if you can find the chip under the panel where the RAM goes.

Posted on Monday, February 20, 2006 - 7:20 pm:

yes there ARE ways of recovering the passwords... passwort_unlock does know how.. involves 3 wires, not two, a little bit of assembly for the port connection, and a program called pony-prog.. then you can dump the chip upon powering up, and the dump can be analyzed to determine the password... THIS IS THE PREFFERED METHOD IF THE HARD DISK IS ALSO LOCKED!!!!! if the hard disk is not locked, then the shorting method will work just fine... (in case i didn't previously mention it, the shorting method will not remove the Hard Disk password, and will render it inoperable, untill someone finds the right chip on it... hehe) it's not an exact science, some fiddling must be done.. but it does work, as you'll see from the many praises on this site... i can continue to reply to emails, although i fear i have offered all the info i have on the subject... i would, if you'd rather not do it yourself, fix it for you.. but then i would be forced to charge something for it ($50 plus shippin? sound resonable?)... up to this point i haven't recieved dime one for obtaining and freely releasing this info... so i don't want ya to think i am a scammer, or just out to make a buck.. but if ya just don't wanna rip into it yourself, then feel free to email me and we can set something up...

I've tried the shorting out method but while the wires are connected together the lights just flash and go off quick, If I then pull apart the wires the laptop will turn on but I get the same thing. If I turn on the laptop and then immediatly connect the wires, shorting out the chip its boots and when the progress bar gets nearly to the end it just powers off?? Any help?

The chip your looking for is 24lc16 on tht bottom side of the board to the left of the dimm b slot you'll find it and the 2 wire jumping method worked just fine on my 5100 so go ahead it's a hassle to disassemble but worth it in the end.
