I am removing my defective, but still working 10GB harddrive and replacing it with a 60GB drive this weekend. My question is about transferring files and optimizing storage on the new harddrive.
My plan is to transfer data files (MyDocuments, Quicken files and a few other misc. items) to a Zip disk and load as many of my programs as I can from their original disks.
So…
How do I make sure that I don't lose essential files like the latest drivers?
Is there an internet site that lists programs one might find on their harddrive and what they might be for?
What is the best strategy for making sure I don't leave out essential files or load unnecessary or even possible nuisance files? (The computer is four years old and has a lot of stuff on it of unknown origin.)
Then…
Are there general principles I should be following for organizing the new harddrive?
Like the 500MB games my son loads or the downloads from movie trailer sites?
Partition? All games in one folder?
I know these are a lot of questions and I thank you in advance for reading through it and offering any suggestions for part or all of it.

Norton GHOST comes to mind here, with it you have the option of ghosting the entire drive over to the 60 gig without losing any data. But like most utilities of this nature it must be run from DOS which means you will need a boot floppy with the GHOST program on it and have some basic DOS knowledge to run it. There are many options you can use a cdr/w drive and good software as well. You can save all Quicken/game folders and files to a disk and export them over to a fresh install of the operating system of your choice. Usually a reinstall of a program is needed such as Quicken then just copy the folders from the cd over to the folders where they would normally be. |

I just replaced a hard drive,motherboard,cpu installed cpu fan soyu sy-ky7vme power on tower fan runs but cpu fan does not no video hard drive beeps twice still nothing cd rom will not run this is all brand new. |

I replaced the CMOS battery in my latitude C600 because when I bought it the clock would often
get reset.
Now it doesn't boot at all
No lights no beeps nothing.
New CMOS battery is connected correctly
Main battery is fully charged, mains power
makes no difference
I used a wrist strap when changing the battery
I'm just wondering if it's some sort of security thing?
Any ideas?
