I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with a 1.9gig 400mhz cpu. Can I up the cpu any at all in this computer. I know the last 400mhz cpu made is a 2.4gig. Any help on this would be appreciated, Dell flat out refuses to answer any question like this.

What socket type is your 1.9 GHZ? If it is a socket 478 your board should support the 2.4GHZ 400 FSB part with no problem. The only issue is the heatsink mount on some Dell PC's were of less than desireable configuration meaning some type of proprietary mechanism that won't accomodate a standard P4 socket478 cooler.
If it is a socket423 you will need an adaptor to use the socket478 cpu and once again the cooler issue might come into play as well.

I have the same question! I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with a 1.8Ghz processor, I think the chipset is 850 intel P4..I upgraded the RD Ram to 640Mb and the graphics card to Nvidia Gforce 5600 256Mb, that helped a lot! It doesn't seem that I can up the processor though, is this true?

To ErinMiller, Depending on the socket style of your P4 board and what Dell has done to the BIOS you may want to check on some of the Dell forums and news groups to see what works and what doesn't.

I just replaced the motherboard battery in a Dell 8200 ( dimension). Now, the ON button just blinks yellow and the system won't boot. Any suggestions? Thanks
Pls reply to rjohnsto@www.gsdi.org

I would like to upgrade my 1.1 USB to the new HI SPEED 2.0 USB on my Dimension 8200 and noticed it currently has 2 ports (stacked one above the other) in the rear and front. How or would I be able to buy a host controller card to fit in, esp there's cards ranging from 2 to 5 ports stacked side by side? Please advise/recommend. Thanks!

The 8200 chipset PCI is more than capable of supporting a USB 2.0 PCI card. It's the operating system that might be an issue as Win2k and XP are the only MS operating systems that support 2.0.

All. I've been researching all topics above as I too have a Dimension 8200 and am looking to squeeze the most out of it before buying a whole new machine.

USB 2.0:
Just an hour ago I installed a USB 2.0 card on this machine w/o a problem. Just buy one and pop it into a PCI slot. I also put one of these into a Dell Optiplex at work and, since it needs its own power, had to use the power supply from the diskette drive to use it. Who needs a diskette drive anyway! :-)

CPU Upgrade:
I've had problems determining what max CPU my mobo could support until I downloaded SiSoftware's Sandra. It is freeware and it is awesome. It gives you all you need to know about your machine. Using it I found that the mobo on my 1.8 Dimension 8200 is upgradeable to 2.4. When you get Sandra take a look at the upgradeability section of the CPU & BIOS Information.

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with RD Ram 128Mb and thinking about upgrading to 640Mb. Will this make a differance with the speed? I use it with Office 2003 and it slow. Thanks

I have a dell dimension 8200 as well. As far as i am aware of, all the usb's are usb 1.1, is there anyway to upgrade your bios to support usb 2.0 or do I have to buy a PCI card?

I also have a Dell 8200 (bought in 2002)and wanted to upgrade to usb 2. I bought a 4 way PCI usb 2.0 card from CompUSA about a year ago and installed it OK, but it did not come with any 2.0 drivers on cd or etc. I now have the card in my machine, no longer have the packaging or proof of purchase, and no driver installed.

Is there a generic driver that I can download for somewhere to get this thing running ?

I have a Dell 8200, after a restart yesterday, the Monitor stays in sleep, and the keyboard is not responding as well....any ideas, I did all the usual checks for plugs and such.

Help! I live in New Orleans--had to disconnect my Dell Dimension 8200 for a new desk after old was destroyed in Katrina flooding. I have reconnected everything but my speakers and subwoofer are not "speaking"! Power light is on for speakers but I must have the connections wrong in the back of the tower?? Harman Kardon model HK695-01,13 with 2 speakers that look like champagne glasses. I have plugged in the green plug but there is a black small plugin that doesn't seem to work and I don't know where to put it--it comes from the subwoofer. Maybe I have the green one in the wrong place also. I lost all my help manuals so if someone could help I would really appreciate it Sara.

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 which recently got a new XP Pro OS installed. My audio control keys at the top of the keyboard don't work any more. Is there a driver that has to be installed/configured?

Please reply via email as I don't visit this site regularly.

thx,
gary
