I have XP Home Edition (new Dell purchased 3/03)and want to try the deltree approach to deleting the temporary files. I cannot find DOS - actually, there seem to be a number of "notepad" dos options when I run a search, but which should I use? Also, the autoexec.bat examples provided are good, but I need every keystroke spelled out, if anyone has the time and inclination. |

XP doesn't have any DOS support other than from within a DOS SHELL so deltree may or may not give the desired results as XP is NT based and files and folders are not where they would be in a DOS Based Operating system like Win98. |

Hi Patrick. There is a way to do this in XP. As you desire. Not with deltree though.... First ... click on Start, Then click on Run Type "command" without the quotes in the open box. Now click OK. A DOS command window will now open on your screen. You can then use the remove directory command to do as you wish. example. C:\patrick\files\work\docs is a folder on your computer containing files in the docs directory pertaining to your work. You also have a directory called C:\patrick\files\home\baseball. If you wanted to remove all files in the files directory at one sweep ... In that dos window that opened when you started "command" now type in ... rmdir /s c:\patrick\files and then hit enter you will be prompted if you really want to delete the files and directories. Hope this helps. Paul |

Andrew, Any files you've deleted locally go in to a special folder called Recycler. It's a hidden read-only system folder in the root of every volume. To view this folder from Explorer click Tools,Folder Options, View tab. Then select Show Hidden Files and Folders, unselect Hide Protected Operating System Files, click OK to close the window. You can now see the Recycler folder along with several other "hidden" files and folders, you then check Restore on the ones you want back. |

Question: I am trying to create an batch file to automatically delete my cookies from c:\Document and Settings\EHogan\Cookies. When in the DOS prompt I can view the Document and Settings directory. I can then go into the EHogan directory. However, when in the EHogan directory I am unable to see the Cookies directory. Therefore when trying to create a batch file it isn't finding the path. Any ideas here? I have edited the properties of the Cookies folder and all is fine there. I sense until I can see the Cookie folder from the DOS prompt I will be unable to create the batch file to delete the temp files. I even tryed to create within the batch file a copy from the path in question to another temp folder and then delete from there, but still no luck it isn't recognizing c:\Documents and Settings\EHogan\Cookies. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

I am also a frusterated Window's user... i bought my HP with xp in it. The only way to install linux (from what i understand) is to get into dos so i can run my disc. But the only way to get to dos from xp is to create a dos boot disc on a 3.5" floppy. Well of course HP decided that laptops don't need a floppy drive anymore cuz we have dvd writers. ahhhh; well, if the rest of you have a floppy drive you can go ahead and make a boot disk. just go to help from the start menu and type in ms dos. your helpful computer will lead you in the right direction |

If Xp is installed using NTFS, You will need a boot disk with FDISK and FORMAT copied from the Windows Me cd. |

You will need to repartition the hard drive with FDISK and Format it with Fat32 after. |
