I have a Compaq 5461 and need to get some HELP!

System Specs..
AMD K6-II 500Mhz
Gigabyte Mobo (or so i think) Model GA-5smm
Currently 375MB's RAM with 512MB's installed

Basically I want to know if I can upgrade my memory. Have done a lot of poking around and Compaq says that I can only have 384MB total memory. On the other hand Gigabyte says that i can have a total of 728MB's. I have upgrade BIOS and MOBO drivers and it still will not support more then 375MB's.

Any advice would be great!!!!

I have looked on the net too on the specs of that mobo, and it seems like you are on the right track with the upgrade. Just in case, the file that you need for the upgrade is located at http://ftp.gigabyte.com.tw/support/temp/5smm_f1.zip

Try flashing the bios again, and see if it works. Otherwise, back to the drawing board. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply...

I reflashed my BIOS and still no improvement..well a little bit says I have 389MB's ram during start up. Im thinking that because it is a compaq it will never be able to live up to the MOBOS specs. Been fun trying to figure this out and think Im gonna build my next one. Thanks agian for the advice any other ideas would be great but Im kinda giving up
