My Ricoh MP9060A CDR/RW/DVD combo drive is working ok with a disk inserted but if it is closed when empty the drive activity light comes on and stays on. The drive then will not open except when I shutdown and use a paperclip to manualy open it. The motherboard is an ABIT BE6 with a 40GB IBM Deskstar hard drive on IDE3 as master and the Ricoh drive on IDE1 as master. The OS is Windows 98SE |

It sounds like that drive may be bad. The easy answer is "try it on another PC". One suggestion I would make is that you should always make your primary (bootable) hard drive the master on the "first" ide channel. If you have a PCI IDE controller card, and you want to use the hard drive on that, I'd suggest that you try making the CDR the master on the secondary onboard IDE. HTH, Good luck. |

Thanks for the reply Dave, I was being hopefull that there was a fix I could apply in the way of settings or connections but other people have said that the drive may be faulty. Fortunately it is still in the warranty period so i am returning it to be repaired or replaced. The hard drive is on IDE3 which is the connector for the built in Ultra ATA/66 controller which when in use becomes the "first" ide channel |

make sure the power connection to the drive is snug inside the system for starters |
