Hard drive not found

my compaq LTE 5250laptop will not boot from the hard drive when i boot from the windows98 startup disk it tells me that the drive does not have a valid fat partition i used a maxtor utilities disk and it shows me that the disk is ok it can not fix because it is not a maxtor drive it is a toshiba drive please help

Hi Rich,
Has the hard drive been working OK in the past or is it a new HDD you are trying to install.
If it is a new installation you may need to fdisk it and remove the old partition that is corrupt. Then create primary partition and then format it. Viz: a:\format c: /s.
Once this is done it should be bootable if a OS is installed.

thank you i have tried that and it says i have no permanent hard drive installed

you could try fdisk /mbr to see if that helps.
