When I try to defrag my hard drive the system will freeze after 10% complete. This also happens if I try to run a full Scan disc. I've checked that there are no programmes or screensavers running in the background and shut down the antivirus software.

First thing I'd try is to start up in safe mode and run them. Different OS's have diferent keys to be able to chose safe mode but I think it's F8. I just keep hitting it until it comes up. I'm not sure the exact time you need to hit it.

Are you sure it freezes or is it still working ?. I have found that "percentage completed" figure stays on 10% for hours and often I have thought it had stopped but eventually it continues. Once past 10% they seem to go faster.

Run defrag in Safe mode 1st , then download ME defrag .

Toggle F8 or press Ctrl key during bootup , choose
safe-mode .

----------------------------------

Windows ME defrag ( free ) , very fast . I don't need to close
( ctrl/alt/delete ) anything down to run defrag , no restarts .
Get it from here .

W9X-Me-Defrag
http://members.home.net/scotterpops/enhancements/enhancements9c.html
http://surecool.com/download.htm
http://ozcountry.tripod.com/winmedefrag.zip

Download it right into your Windows directory. Rename your
current version of Defrag to Defrag.OLD, then rename
winme_DEFRAG.EXE to Defrag ( or whatever the old defrag
was named )

=================================

To put the defrag in it's correct place .
Open Windows explorer , go down to Windows , left click on the yellow
folder , this opens the right hand panel .
Scroll down to defrag & write down the exact name . Next , right
click on defrag , scroll down to rename & click on it . Now left
click at the end of defrag & add the word old . So if you had the
word defrag , it now becomes defragold .
Now rename MEdefrag to whatever you wrote down , drag & drop it on
the yellow Windows folder or anywhere in the right hand side .
Both achive the same thing & Windows will after you close , put it
alphabetically . That's it .

=================================

Also , to make ME Defrag even Faster for it's 1st run , from
Windows Explorer , Delete all the files ( except the read only file )
in Windows / Applog .
To view Applog , do this .
Windows Explorer > View > Folder Options > View , click on Show all files . Click OK .
Taskmon will rebuild the Applog file .

Thanks everyone,
Running in safe mode did the trick.

Help,

I am running win98, and can not run scandisk in the "safe mode". I start the process however it does not finish. I get to 1%, then it locks up and gives a constant beeping. I am only in sector 1 of 30,628. I can not run a Defrag since it stops running and tells me to fix my problems first using scandisk. Any help out there?

Pete

Try running them from your startup disk.
