Hello all:
I recently put new RAM (a 128 meg pc-100 chip to go along with my previous 64 megs)in my computer and have encountered a problem. A high pitched whine starts without warning! The computer still seems to be working but the sound is so loud that I have to shut down. When I try to shut down, the sound persists. Bad memory? It is being detected at start up.

Have you tried removing the new module to see if the whine is still there?

I have known of a "going" power supply and also a cracked fan on the CPU to create the kind of noise you describe. Just a few thoughts.
