I have a problem with my soundcard, it is a xitel storm platinum with the aureal vortex 2 chipset, and when I use it for any certain length of time, it freezes up my PC. It has the directsound hardware acceleration which can be turned on and off, but whether or not I use it, it doesn't seem to make too much difference. What do you think may be the cause of this? I've had a look at the system requirements etc and they do not appear to be any issue at all (100mhz processor, 15mb Hd space, 16mb of ram...) I have an AMD Duron 650mhz with 128mb ram and a 6.1g HD. I'm wondering whether it could be my motherboard (an FIC AZ11 w/ onboard AC97 sound, also when disabled and enabled it doesnt seem to make any difference) with a PCI communication problem. Can you help? Matt |

What O.S. are you using Matthew? If it is Win98 or 98SE you may want to try booting in safe mode and removing duplicate devices from device manager. I had an Aureal based sound card for many years and liked it alot and the one thing I did notice about the card is it doesn't like sharing resources with other devices very much. |

Yeah, Windows 98se...I've tried what you said and it seemed to work to some extent, but only really prolongs the crashing for a little longer. Thanks for the advice tho. |

If you use DirectX7 or 8, you may want to get a new sound card as Aureal is no longer providing any support/drivers. |

I got an email back from tch support at xitel, they said to download the newest Aureal drivers (at www.vortexofsound.com) and install the latest via 4in1 drivers for my motherboard. Seeing as I had heard a press release regarding drivers for the storm platinum basically saying that xitel will not update drivers because they are stopping production of that particular chipset (vortex2) I didn't really expect for xitel to say to download new drivers...but they did, I downloaded them 9and the 4in1 for mobo) and installed them...works like a charm. Ha! yeah, I do use directx8, but doesn't seem ot be a problem. Thanks! |

That's good that the drivers worked with your card, not everybody who owns a vortex2 card was so lucky as many manufacturers implemented their own setups for the card and the generic drivers would not be recognized by the OS. Mine was such a card so I switched back to Creative Labs PCI series and Windows native driver support. |
