I have seen winmx and Bozai Buddy cause more freezing and lockups problems on computers than I can count on fingers and toes combined. Uninstall it and see if your problems mysteriously go away.

My computer freezes. I had a new video card installed a RAGE 128. It caused all sorts of freezing problems. I finally solved that problem(it was a conflict with Norton). My USB worked fine before the video card. Since then if I try to enable my USB by hitting delete when the computer is booting and going into setup, my computer freezes. It does not freeze right away, but sure enough as soon as I try to use word or listen to music or sign on to the internet FREEZING is a guarantee. No matter what. CTR ALT DEL cant reset it, the power button does not work to reset it, I can only press the reset button to get the computer to start again. If I leave the USB and the USB legacy support disabled in set up, my computer works perfect. I thought I needed to update my USB driver, and then someone said I might need to adjust the BIOS. I am at a loss!

My computer runs Windows 98 SE
333mhz processor
128 MBRAM
ALI M1541 A1 motherboard

I dont know if this information will help. Has anyone ever heard of this before?

Eternally grateful

Look for a setting in the bios that automatically assigns an irq for USB or in some Asus boards have the IRQ assigned by the O.S. Worked with most Asus P5A boards.

I am self taught when it comes to computers. I read your message and I dont see where in the bios an irq is automatically assigned to the USB, but after reading your message I searched for irq on google and I read a bunch of info on irq's and I found out how to check which irq my USB was using and it is using irq 10. Sharing it with "irq holder for PCI". When I go to amibios it says I am using amibios hiflex setup utility ver 1.21

I dont know if any of this info makes a difference - I appreciate the time that you took to respond - Thank you.

A hard lockup such as yours can be very difficult to diagnose since the keyboard also locks up so you can't CTL ALT DEL to check what is running and what has stopped responding. My best guess is perhaps a driver update for the Ali chipset and Win98SE. http://www.ali.com.tw/eng/support/support_faq_product.htm

You have been very kind - THANK YOU. My computer is currently downloading a USB Driver from that download site so I will update the driver and see what happens. I will let you know. Thanks again.

Hello again;

I downloaded the USB Driver and it said to restart the computer which I did and it said new hardware detected and it went through the setup and so I enabled my USB and it froze as soon as I logged onto the internet and tried to play some music. However I have used my dsl this morning for awhile without it freezing, I wonder if it is in conflict with my music/video player. BUT having said that it still will freeze eventually but it seems to happen right away with stuff that is audio/video related. Thanks again for your help, I thought I would just drop a note to let you know what happened in case someone else has a similar problem. I dont know what I might do next, it seems that a couple of hundred dollars (probably) to take it in somewhere would be a waste, I might be better off saving for a newer system.

Anyhoo thanks again.
