My P.C may run fine for hours but occasionally the windows (XP) shutdown screen appears & if I do not restart, swithches off itself.
It also switches itself on randomly & gets past the memory check & switches off again.
Do not know how often this happens.
Have noticed that after it tries to boot itself, I have to push the power on button 2-3 times before it works.
The only original components left that have not been changed are:
The case, the 1700+ chip & the 256mb DDR memory.

I have tried:
2 different motherboards, 3 graphics cards (AGP),
3 power supplies (300w), 2 modems (1 int 1 ex),
2 OS (XP & ME), tried onboard sound instead of SB live 5.1.
Have not tried Semtex yet but might soon.

Update.............
Fitted new memory chip...ok for 10hrs then switched off (bringing up shutdown box first)
Tried disabling ASPI but H/D would not boot.

One thing I omitted to say, (because it's so unbelievable I'm not sure it really happened) is that whilst I was in the Bios screen, trying various things, the XP shutdown box came up & P.C. switched off.......weird eh!

XP Shutdown prompt from Bios? Sounds more like a built in high Temp shutdown which in some cases may resemble a Windows shutdown Prompt and can occur from bios.
