Hello. I'm working on a Compaq 5452, about three years old. This is no lie, it takes about 20min to boot to windows. It hangs on the Compaq screen for about 10min, then blank for about 10. Once I'm in windows it locks up. I've tested the memory, the hard drive is good. When the heat sink was removed, there was no 'goo' and a small black spot on the heat sink. Is the cpu about fried? Since it hangs before windows starts, I figured it's not windows. I tried booting from a floppy, but it takes a long time and only goes partway before stopping. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Mary |

Hi Mary, I have seen in the past where a bad L2 cache can cause the long boot delay and hangups. try disabling L2 cache in the bios if you can, than save settings your computer will run slower and DMA may not function but at least you will know that's the problem. |
