is there a way of copying one partitioned drive over to this backup drive or do i have to buy more copying utilities to do this
thanks for any help you can give

Are you creating a ghost image of the drive or copying it. I would suggest the ghost image as it is will compress the image somewhat and works quite reliably.

Might also want to defrag and scandisk both drives first.

The manual with Norton Ghost isn't the best so here is a link explaining making a ghost image.
