My son accepted a used computer as a gift from a "computer guru". It wouldn't light off so he had a local shop put in a new power supply. Now it starts but reports the keyboard malfunctioning or not present (I've tried 4 keyboards in PS-2 and USB modes with the same result everytime). I've also reset the BIOS to default status . . . no change. My computer buddies, who are more knowledgeable than I, conclude the port is blown on the motherboard. (The keyboard lights do flash when the computer is starting up?) Assuming that I need a new motherboard (Soltek SL-54U5) where would you suggest I look for one. It's vintage 1998 and discontinued. The processor is an AMD K6-2/300. If I can't find an exact replacement, is there a later motherboard that will have the same connector configuration? Probably not. Anyway, any help you could give would be appreciated. I could look like a hero to my son! Thanks in advance.

what kind of case is it? i have a couple of spare fic pa-2013 motherboards that can handle a k6-2 550mhz cpu tops. lower speed on an intel cpu. so, go with an amd. they're version 2.1 of this model, and i believe fic discontinued it. but not exactly positive. they work. e-mail me if you want one. i can ship it. i have an extra 550 cpu, but i'd hate to get rid of it in case my other system that has this type setup blows out. you should be able to use yours, or find a 550 somewhere, and you'd need to use pc-100 memory ecc or non ecc, as well as it'll only take 256 megs ram max in only 2 slots despite what the manual says. only thing is, it'll have to take a certain type video card, a tnt works fine, but it won't take greater than a tnt, or a 3dfx(voodoo) 3000 type.

ah... i got another computer too, an old 486 dx that i'm going to part out. the sound, modem (both isa slot cards which the motherboard will take), 44x cd-rom and 1.44mg floppy are good, have to find the drivers somewhere on the net. but if i don't get rid of it, i'll trip over it, heh. if he wants a good starter machine for learning to build, there ya go. i might have an stb 4400 agp card 16 meg too, have to look.

oh, i forgot, this motherboard is within the last year age wise and hardly used. it'll take win98, win98se, or win2000 but i don't know what winxp will do with it. i can make up a driver disk from my archives for the motherboard drivers, however, do not use the disk drive driver from via, let winxx use it's own, for some reason it tweaks out with the via driver on win98. 300 watt power supply is recommended, minimum 250watt.

win, thank you for your response.

I found a SOLTEK SL-54U1 for sale. It is supposedly identical to the 54U5 except for the cache size. Now all I need is to find the switch and jumper settings for a K6-2/300 chip on that board.
