Ok, I was gaming like usual, and after about an hour or so, there was this "hissing" noise that starting coming from my computer, which was bizarre. There was no degradation in gameplay that i could notice, but the hissing scared me so i was reaching for the power button, but before I could hit it the screen went black. I have an t-bird 1.2 gig (i thinkmaybe 1.3, but close enough), and an ATA something or other motherboard. I've had this comp for about a year with no problems. I figured at first something had fried, or perhaps the cpu fan quit. Turns out not, the cpu fan was working fine when i opened it up, and the heat sink didnt feel overly hot. (just warm in fact) strangely enough, after several failed attempts to get my computer to turn on and more of this "hissing noise," it turned on like normal! ???? After about 30 seconds it switched off again though, and the longest i can get it to stay on is till it starts scan disk (from all the crashes). The longer "cool-off" time i give it, the farther is will go before turning off, so im pretty sure its not a software problem. When it turns off, the hissing immediately stops, but the fans are still spinning. The ram checked, i figured if it loads windows, and is going through scandisk..etc, that its not a hard drive. I couldn't really tell what/where this hissing was, but it seemed to be coming from the processor, or perhaps the power supply, but i couldnt really tell. Needless to say, i thought this was a bizarre problem, because everything "seems" to be OK, but something obviously isnt. motherboard? processor? And although I'm not very knowledgeable about hardware...perhaps the gel between the heatsink and the processor "failed" or something? maybe its boiling away or something, thus the hissing? I dunno, anyone have any ideas? Thank you a lot! |

Maybe your power supply has failed and is not providing sufficient voltage on one of the lines (or too much). Try replacing it, since you say the noise may be coming from it. |

totally agree, happened to me too, rem that most hardware requires alot of power, try a 400w atx |
