I have a HP Pavillion N5195 with WIN ME that was working beautifully till this week. I went to start it up the other day and got a slap in the face. The light comes on, the fan runs for a few seconds and then one of two things happens. One, it shuts back off, or two, the light stays on but nothing else comes on. Push the caps button, no light, push cd drive button, no response, push all the keys franticly like a madman trying to get a beep so I know it's still alive, no response. The monitor never even turns on and quite frankly, it does'nt sound like the hard drive is ever even trying to turn on, just the fan. This is my computer for work and contains a lot of irreplaceable documents. Please help before I drown this thing in the lake.

Sounds like a bad power supply, but I would check again to make sure the hard drive is not firing up. If it is, it's most likely the cpu is bad. If it's under warrenty be careful that they don't wipe the hard drive clean. I've seen it happen. If the cpu or power supply needs to be replaced, it should have no affect on the hard drive.

No, hard drive isn't turning on, don't know what a cpu is. No Warranty.

Taking the power supply out is an easy task. You can take the power supply to your local computer shop so it can be matched up to a new one. The new power supply should have at least a 300watt output.
