I have a 80 gb Seagate and a 17 gb Seagate HD. If I place one in the first IDE and the other in the second IDE, when I try to copy a large amount of files (200 meg+) windows hang out (blank screen, or sometimes blue screen of death) or restart my computer. If I put the HDs in the same IDE there is no problem, but my CDRW go in the second IDE and the same problems occurs, I can´t write a CD (hangs in the 15% -/+). If I attemp to put any another IDE device in the second IDE and copy from or to the first the systm hangs. Help please!
My PC is a Athlon Thunderbird 1.33 GHz, 320 MB Ram, Soyo motherboard with VIA chipset (with the last via 4 in 1 drivers, maybe this is a problem), Win98 SE. This is driving me crazy!

Thanks: Rockman

Sorry for my english, I´m from Argentina.

PS: Just for the record, the first time I use the 80 GB HD I can´t copy more than 30 GB, if I copy more, al the system data corrupts. This problem goes when I do a low level format, but the copy IDE to IDE problem, how appear when I start to use the 80 GB HD doesnt. ¿A virus maybe?

I had the same problem and it wound up being a Windows 98 thing.

Not to say it is in your case but in mine installing Win 2000 on the same hardware as a second bootable OS fixed the problem. Even reinstalled Win 98 a couple times and played musical ide drives but each time was the same.

You might try defrag, scandisk, rebooting then shutting down all other programs even those on the taskbar and not using the computer for anything else while it copies.

If Windows 98 is in a generous mood\mode it might then let you copy large files.

Possibly there is an update for this but I somehow doubt it.

Good Luck
