Hi all,
I have this problem, the pc just reboots itself no and then,no doing anything in particular, its done it when sitting idle.It seems like some kind of power failure , as i get the scandisk screen upon reboot. The cpu fan seems fine, as does the power supply fan.Can anyone suggest any checks i can do.I hope i am in the right topic, if i am not i apologise

TIA
E.S.

This is the right topic for power issues, however a little more info such as CPU type Memory and operating system is needed.

Check for irq's shared in device manager, also make sure that the drivers for the motherboard chipset are installed as win98 will need them in order to properly identify what the AGP port is and possibly the IRQ routing table.

Check IRQ14 and IRQ15 Intel 82801BA Ultra ATA Storage Controller listed 2 times sharing 2IRQS. It should only have one listing in device manager and then the Primary and Secondary IDE controllers. Could be a problem being detected twice. Try rebooting in safe mode and delete all multiples of devices in device manager. Reboot, than let windows redetect all the hardware it finds, better have a disk with updated drivers handy just in case windows can't find them.

What if your PC isn't even into Windows yet?
I have a Compaq that is intermittently rebooting
and it's done it at POST, at Windows boot, in
DOS, Linux (nanobox)
I've pulled and swapped memory with no effect.
I've had a multimeter on the 5v and 12v power
lines and don't see any fluctuation when the
reset occurs. Checked household power as well.
the thing just intermittently resets itself.
and now it's blown the boot_volume for WinXP.
I'm thinking Mainboard and/or CPU at this point.
