well, there's a little more to my problem than a high pitched noise actually. Here's what happened:

I bought a barbone kit that came with a motherboard. I bought a cpu seporately to go with it (they're compatable).
I've assembled the whole thing and went to plug in the computer. Nothing happens except a slight, high pitched noise of, i'm assuming, is electricity doing something. trouble is, there is no power to the computer at all. I've assembled computers about half a dozen times before, but they've at least started to boot or something when i've turned them on. This one seems dead except for that slight electricity-sounding noise when i plug it in. Everything seems to be plugged in right...but i have to mention that when i took the cpu out of the box....it slipped out of it's staticfree bag and landed on the floor. did this kill it maybe?? :(

ANY ideas guys??

Possibly, but I doubt it.
Most BIOS will detect a dead processor, and report an error in the POST.

Start with the easy stuff first - check the PSU, check the electrical connections, and make sure that the Rocker switch on the back of the PSU is in the correct position (sounds dumb, but I've missed it before) - double check jumper settings. Make sure the unit is plugged in......etc.
If nothing, remove everything except the CPU, memory and video, and try again.

The high pitched whine is probably the UHF signal from the monitor. Turn it off to check......

i once had a really high pitched noise when i was buildin my computer. I only had the barebones tho [cpu, ram, gfx]. Anyways i was really concerned so i turned teh power off and unplugged it all [power that is] and the sound died. i located the sound to be coming from the cpu. anyways i turned the power on again a few times and eventually the noise died and my com is still fine to this day [i think]
But ur problem may be more serius so dont blame me if ur new com blows up or sumthin!!

also, wot u sed about ur CPU fallin on the floor. Mine too was damaged when i got it and when i put it in and booted up, nothing happened at all. so i sent it back and they gave me a new 1.
