Hi all, I hope someone can help me with a problem i have. This is the second time i have asked for help on this problem, the last time it seemed to put itself right, but the same problem has come back recently. It is this the pc reboots itself, at random times, whilst on the 'net, and while just working away. There seems to be no pattern to it at all.Can anyone tell me what to check and what to look for.I am running Windows 98SE, 256 sdram, Gigabyte mobo Intel 845 AGPset/ICH2, Pentium 4.Sometimes when the pc reboots it tries to look for wave device for my external modem, it is already installed, and the modem is working fine, this only happens rarely.I suspect it may be a power problem because when it reboots itself i get the microsoft scandisk window. The pc has worked fine up until the last few weeksand I haven't installed any new hardware.I hope some one can give me clue to what is happening. TIA Ron |

this might be it !!! i started getting the same problem not long ago, my computer would just reboot at random times! i had a long think about it and the only thing that changed recently, was the weather! it got very hot! i opened my computer up and placed a large fan infront of it! the problem is gone! but when i stop the fan, soon after, it happens again! make sure your computer is not stuffed in a small area where it cannot "breathe", make sure your cpu fan is working! thats all i can think of! hope it helps! |

He is right but that is not a lasting solution. You may be exceeding the power supplys wattage rating. As the board pulls more current the voltage drops. The P.S. raises the voltage to compensate but volts X current = watts i.e. heat! The heat causes everything to pull more current and exacerbates the problem. The fan helps and makes it work for a while but the solution is to get a bigger power supply or lighten the load. (pull some goodies out.) I didn't and eventually burned out my power supply, mother board, memory, processor and CD rom. Don't wait that long! |
