I have an IBM 27 GB HD. My motherboard has 4 IDEs. When I put the HD in the third IDE by itself on its own cable, it doesnt show in my computer and it isnt detected. why?

If the drive isn't fdisked in win98 it won't show up without a valid partition. If in winxp make sure that the ide controller the Hard drive is connected to is properly installed or at least enabled in the bios.

You should also check the jumpers on the HDD and make sure it is setup as Master.

The controller on the mainboard is what I was referring to. Make sure the drive is recognized in the Bios.

my bios only recognizes my first two ide's, not the third or fourth one.

What make and model board do you have and is the second set of controllers perhaps only for a RAID array?

Promise PDC20276 ATA 133 RAID controller
Most integrated promise raid controllers are selectable as standard ide via a jumper or more recently via a bios setting. Check the manual.
