I have Windows XP. I decided to reformat my hard drive because my comp was getting really laggy. I have two hard drives in my computer, a 40 GB main one and a 80 GB backup. Using FDisk, which only showed one partition, I formatted my 40 GB main one, but now after reinstalling Win XP, it says in My Computer that I have to format my D:\ backup before I can access it. Has the data on it been formatted? How? Is there any way to get the data back?

When you reinstalled win XP are you sure the drive you installed it on was the 40 gig? or perhaps only 1/2 of the 80 gig, When doing a reinstall where 2 drives could be involved I generally will disconnect the backup drive until after the install is completed. That in turn removes all doubt. One way to find out is to shutdown disconnect the 80 gig drives power and IDE cable and reboot if XP starts up and loads we can go from there.

Was anything on the original drive encrypted ?
XP does a decent job with security, and the new installation may not be able to see files encrypted by the original.
