I picked the HD forum because my problem manifests itself during certain read/write proccesses.
first my config:
-Soyo Dragon Plus! mobo w/via kt266a chipset
-Amd Athlon 2000+ running at stock 1.66ghz
-768 megs of pc2100 ddr ram (1 generic 512 stick 1 crucial 256 stick)
-2 Maxtor 120 gig w/8meg cache
-1 Western Digital 120 gig w/8 meg cache
-2 Western Digital 40 gig with standard cache
two of the 120 gig drives are partitioned at about 70/50 the other 120 and the 2 40 giggers are single partition drives
all partitions are ntfs
Sony dru500a dvd +/-r
siig udma 133 ide controler card
nvidia gforce4 ti 440 w/128 ddr
ati tv wonder ve tuner card
onboard 24bit audio
onboard l0/100 ethernet
Silencer 400 atx power supply
Windows xp pro w/sp1
my bios is the latest version and my 4in1s are the latest as well
this configuration has worked fine for over a year...now pft.

first the set up:
I use winrar quite a bit because i work with others in other parts of the world and have to send them large file(sometimes graphics sometimes video)that are better sent as many archived parts rather than one big file... we use an sfv checker to make sure the files are good. When changes are made, the file is re archived and a new sfv file is created.
my problem is this...
i will get seemingly arbitrary crc errors. i will do the work on the file then rearchive it using my standard profile which is no compression
include recover record..etc then check the archives and one is bad...the original file is not bad...just that one archive... I will rearchive it and now a different rar file is bad. all the while the original file is fine...
sometimes(usually after reboot) it will work and once i get good archives ill upload em to our ftp site and all is fine. When downloading files that my collaborators have worked on i will get a bad file or two...re download em and then another shows as bad. i do eventually get it but its frustrating as all get out.
I have checked all my discs for errors and all are good...i keep them defragged with Diskeeper 7
I have tried different versions of winrar but nothing changes.
I run Kaspersky antivirus personal pro. and keep my virus defs up to date...i did get hammered by the blaster worm and this problem seemed to start around then but i installed the patch from ms and no worm/virus problems since...ive done extensive scanning to insure no instance of any virus remains.
I am stumped...any ideas would be much appreciated. I am getting ready to try and isolate the problem by setting up another computer and moving parts over one by one but this is a tidious process and i figured perhaps someone here would be able to save me from the tedium not to mention the down time...
thanks

oh yeah...one of my first thoughts was power...but ive removed up to 3 of the drives and still had the problem
as far as heat goes...my proc stays around 85f and my chassis temp stays around 100f.

im sorry for this loooong question...but not that sorry i guess =/ i mean you read it, right?

Great information, now to the root of the problem, the 4in1 driver version 4.49 you are apparently using is probably the culprit. How do I know this you might ask? After I DL'd the new driver and installed it I could no longer Decrypt DVD's to my hard drive without CRC errors or just flat out not reading any data correctly. I went back to the 4in1 V4.48 and the problem went away. By the way. My hard drives are connected to a Promise ATA controller and the DVD and CDRW are connected to the onboard IDE. Hence the read errors.
