My Compaq Presario desktop, WinXP won't get to the Win screen anymore. During start up it sounds like the comp. is trying to read from the floppy drive (the sound is terrible), and I get the same error message you'd get if you forget to remove the floppy disk from the drive before start/re-boot(blah blah, press any key to continue). Why is it trying to read from the floppy drive all of a sudden?

I have tried to run the Compaq recovery cd, but it won't run, so now I'm really worried that there's something wrong with the hard drive. Don't even want to think about all the stuff I'll lose should the hard drive be defected. Please help.

Thank you,
Ann

Try a new floppy drive in the system, it should be able to accept a standard floppy drive no problem. Your PC is probably setup to boot from floppy first than cdrom than hard drive. If for some reason the floppy drive is detecting a disk in the drive at startup, (which in your case there isn't really one in it)it won't go any farther due to the error.
If you can get into CMOS setup change the boot order to start with cdrom first hard drive second floppy last, save your settings. That should take care of the error until you can get a replacement floppy drive.
