im running win 98se. ive just plugged in my new hdd as a slave on the same ide cable. the bios recocnises the new drive but it does not show up in my computer. the device manager agrees that the new hdd is their, but it wont allow me to allocate a drive letter to it. i only wanted to formatte the new slave using fdisk whilst still in windows. any ideas?

FDISK is a DOS application and must be run from a DOS prompt. You can format from Windows 98 after the FDISK.

FDISK doesn't work that way, while in the FDISK utility you will be able to select the drive from the menu.

You will notice from the websight posted above that the screens are clickable. What you are dealing with is fixed disk 2 choose it from option 5. enter your fixed disk drive number which is 2. Press escape, choose to create a dos partition or logical dos drive. Follow the directions, set the parameters for the drive You can specify if you want to use the whole drive or a part(ition) of it. Make your selection in percentage or Mbytes. Let Fdisk do its thing, than you might be prompted to set partition as active Y/N and on you go. When you are done exit from the FDISK utility and restart your computer. Boot to windows and format the drive.

Don't worry that the FDISK on the web page is 95, it is nearly the same as for 98.
