Seems Like it was just seconds, but for my XP 1700+ it was an eternity. While cleaning my wife's computer I had taken off the heat sink to make cleaning it easier. Got it turned the wrong way when I reinstalled it, and guess what, it wasn't touching the processor at all. Sure seemed like it went quick. The smell of burning silicon(?) still is in the case. Ordered a new XP 2400+ yesterday. What a way to upgrade.

It takes 2.3 seconds for an AMD Athlon CPU to reach 300 degrees. Hardly enough time to react at all.
