External hard drive problems

I recently purchased a Lacie d2 Firewire hard drive for my PC. I run Windows ME, a 1GHz AMD Athlon Processor and have 384Mb RAM. I connect the harddrive through a DV capture card, which I was told by Lacie is acceptable. When transferring files from my main harddrive to the external one after a few seconds it stops and says I have disconnected the hard drive. Anyone know of any solutions any help would be gratefully recieved.
