I am a computer novice. I am trying to get a computer set-up for my 14 yog starting high school. I got this computer from our church garage sale. They apparently went thru stuff and labeled everything. It is labeled "pentium - 32mb ram, 7gb HD - cd - zip drive". I am assuming it has a HD, but possibly the computer is not talking to the HD. On start-up it goes thru the energy star page, then a second ID page, which I can't read fast enough (can I freeze that page, so I can read it). Then it gives the above message "press any key to reboot". I am familiar with BIOS set-up and how to get around in that. Please direct me to good helps forums or let me know what to do here. I believe all things can be learned and mastered with time. If we live in a computer age, we need to know how to make them work and fix them when the don't, just like a vacuum cleaner or other tool you use. ONly, I know computers are a little more complicated than that. Our budget is nill.

If possible, please email me privately.

Janet, the pause break key can be used to halt the progress and enter key to resume. The second page at startup usually gives the information on detected drives memory and installed devices IRQ's and what not, that is a good place to start. The BIOS setup might even give you the option of looking at installed drives directly as well.
Chances are pretty good if the system was wiped of data before it was sold the Operating system may have been deleted as well, or at least part of it. That would also explain the Press Any Key to Reboot Message. As far as private emailing goes, the forum isn't about that as it is a community where others may be able to benefit.

i brought my hard drive to a friend's place to have it wiped and to install winxp. once in my computer, the memory is checked and my drives are detected, then it asks me to "press any key to reboot". what's up with that?

After you wiped the hard drive did you reinstall XP? If so was it installed on your machine or someone elses and than moved to your machine.

XP was installed and setup on another person's machine. should I just wipe it on their machine and install and setup on my machine?
