I can't figure out how to get in the bios of my Compaq Prisario 4704. I have tried all the F keys. I need to get in there to change the boot sequence to install suse linux. Also when i tried to install win 95 it says i cant install win without a dos boot partition but that is what i thought i was doing. I would be grateful if u email me and help me with my problems.

Try this:

Press F10 when you see a square in top right corner of the screen.

Compaqs are tricky, they keep the bios, for the most part, on a proprietary section of the boot drive that is completely hidden from DOS or Windows. If you deleted this partition, then you may have a world of trouble.

You can go to compaqs website and hit the downloads section. You want to download a Softpaq for your model of computer. You usually need to reinstall the softpaq to add new drives. There may also be other downloads for your model. These may completely setup your hard drive they way compaq likes it.

You may have to bite the bullet and bring it to a compaq service centre, not a dealer, for help.

I have a Easy Photo Imagewave scanner that I used with a Compag 486 machine. I have since purchased a Hewlett Packard Pavilion 6535 computor. I would like to know if I can use this scanner with the HP Machine or do I have to replace it with a compatible scanner?

I would like to know if I can use this scanner with the HP Machine or do I have to replace it with a compatible scanner? I have heard that I can get a upgrade driver and change a setting in the Bios of my Hp, to Ecp or epp, which is suppose to enable me to utilze this scanner with the HP. Can I get some help with this.

check your manual for instructions on how to get into the HP bios, probrably pressing DEL during the initial boot up will do it.

Enter the integrated peripherals area and change the LPT port type to EPP/ECP and select 1.9 if you have the option to choose between 1.7 or 1.9

If you have no Integrated Peripherals area, look throught the other areas for LPT Port Type Or Settings.

Make sure the LPT Port remains at IRQ 7!!!

You will then have to reboot. You may need to delete the LPT device from your device manager and reboot again to make it detect the port as EPP/ECP... But in Win98 this shouldnt be necessary.

Afterwards, reinstall all of your scanner software.

Please note: Many paralell port scanners, although they claim to, do not seem to work well if daisy chained with a printer attached. Many printers use software that constently monitors the port and will not release the port to other programs like your scanner software. If you cannot scan OR cannot print, yet the software for your printer and scanner are installed correctly, I would have a 2nd LPT port card installed. For best results, get an ISA version, make sure it is ECP/EPP and jumper set. Put the printer to LPT2 on the new card, and your scanner on the original LPT port.

Good Luck friend.

No I wont, cause, no offense, I dont want you burning your bios doing it wrong. You need to know the manufacturer, and model number of your board, not just "mainboard MMX", then go to their website and follow their instructions.

Put in the wrong BIOS, and whalla DEAD MAINBOARD. If you have never done it before, just don't, ask a qualified person to do it for you, maybe they will show you how.
