Hi, so a friend of mine spilled a beer on my table a few nights back, and didnīt say anything about it, and my 2002 Compaq Presario 700US slurped up the beer through the bottom of the case...beer soaked the 20gb hard drive, and itīs completely fried (hooked the drive up to a friendīs laptop, no dice). Everything else seems fine though.

Iīm in Chile now, so parts and tech service are expensive...a friend of mine had an old but still functional 10gb hard drive from a 1999 laptop. I connected it, installed Windows XP successfully, everything seemed to be going fine...I could use the computer just for an hour or so, but then this clicking would start and it would freeze within a minute. Now a few days have passed and the clicking starts almost immediately after booting up the bloody thing. Iīve done my best to read around, but Iīm not sure...does that means the motherboardīs just not recognizing the hard drive? Is the hard drive to old? Or could the hard drive be bad? Or could the motherboard or some connection within the computer have been damaged by the beer? Or could there be some sort of static electricity problem?
When I had the case open and was inspecting the beer damage, one of my friends started touching without grounding himself. I need new friends. Hopefully I donīt need a new computer though...any ideas on what could be wrong, or what tests/experiments I could try? Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!

Thanks so much for your prompt response. Do you think there is any chance that the hard drive is dying because beer got somewhere else into the computer (for example is it possible that a section of the mother board is damaged, and that is in turn damaging any hard drive i install? A friend of mine says that is possible, and therefore wonīt let me test my system with his hard drive.)
Also, are the clicks definitely that the hard drive is dying, or could it be that the hard drive is just not connecting properly with the mother board? Thanks again,

- Eric

liquid and electronics don't mix well so it is possible that more than the hard drive is at fault.
At this point in time the only test would be to try another hard drive.
