I have a second computer which I haven't use for a couple of months. I plugged it in, turned it on and only the front leads went on. I opened it up and disconected both HD's, took out all the card except for the video but nothing happened. The monitor gives me a message of "no signal". While I opened the pc I also noticed that the PII fan is not working but all the disks have power. What gives? Are this the final words of a dying motherboard? maybe the power supply? Any help will be appreciated. |

Are you getting any beeps ?
And is this an ATX board, or an AT? If it is an AT system, the fact that your drives get power and the lights come on means nothing. In an ATX computer, power is actually switched through the software switch on the mainboard, thus indicating at least some functionality within the mainboard.
Let us know if there are any beep codes produced and if this is an AT or ATX board. If you don't know how to tell, email me and I will describe the difference. |

Thanks for your reply. The main board is an Asus P2L97 AGP ATX. Besides the noises coming from the drives being powered up, there are no beeps at all. |

Many ASUS ATX mainboards require a CPU fan powered through the mainboards. If your CPU fan is dead or is a type that does not hook through the mainboard for power, the computer may not boot.
As well, try reversing the speaker cable, it may be on backwards, and see if you get a POST Beep.
Also, what CPU is in this computer?
As well, try disconnecting the hard drive and any other IDE devices to see if the computer then boots and gives video.
These are the first few things I would try, based on the symptoms you described. It has been my experience that people don't try enough different things before trashing their mainboard, so keep at it if you have the time and patience. Let me know what you try and I will keep replying ok?
NOTE: double check that the CPU, RAM and Video card are all seated completely down in their slots. Especially the CPU and RAM. Reseat them if you are not sure. |
