it could be a hardware conflict. i had this happen when i had my older computer with a sound card that was not directx compatable. there were lockups and such. i'd check your hardware specs including the motherboard. see what turns up.

please post back what you found in order to help you further.

you'll need to re-install the drivers. there could also be an irq conflict. but first, try the drivers.

Joanne, the splats on your primary-secondary are the PIIX drivers for your controller. You will need to reload these drivers. This could be relatively simple depending on the OS and motherboard. If it is WIN98 all you need do is remove the PCI bus and restart. WIN98 will take over from there upon boot. Be prepared to reinstall drivers for your modem, sound card and video card especially if these are PCI peripheralls. This will most likely take care of your splat on the sound card as well if it is a PCI sound card.

As regards to that shutting down and restarting your system. I personally wouldn't put $100.00 bet on that correcting your problem but the conflict splats need to be corrected regardless.

good luck

On first onset of turning on my computer..Compaq.. it goes through the process to start windows 98, but when it displays windows 98 you see three quarters of the screen displayed and the computer freezes and five minutes passes the computer gives a statement on msdos(a black screen) stating that the computer can't find the C:\drive or hardware.
Please help!

This is a hardware failure. Normally the hard drive itself has failed to cause this error. If you look at the front of the computer, you may notice the green LED on, as well as a solid red LED. If this is the case, the hard drive may have a failed controller, and will need to be replaced. As far as attempting to repair this yourself, about the only thing you can do is to attempt to run scandisk.exe to try to clean up any possible bad sectors you may have.
