I have a Compaq 5050 running Win 98. I was out of HD space so bought a new MAxtor 40 gig HD. It installed easily, set it up as slave, ran FDISK and formatted it. Then I loaded two applications, FS2000 and Soldoier of Fortune. Both loads went EOJ fine. When I click on the icon or the App itself, I get fatal exception errors. I can see all the files are there when I look at the HD thru Explorer. Anyone have any ideas?? |

It might be an issue with the different access speeds of the drives. Your old drive is probably an UDMA 33 or 66, and your new drive is most likely an UDMA 100. It might have trouble being a slave to the older drive. Try making it the master on the secondary IDE controller. The best thing to do would be to start from scratch with the new drive as C: (primary master). You could also look at getting an Ultra ATA 100 controller card. They cost around $40 and will allow you to get the most from that zippy new drive. It might also be a problem with the chipset and/or bios on your motherboard. Maxtor has a utility that looks like it might address this problem at: http://www.maxtor.com/SoftwareDownload/utilities.html Look for 100updt.exe |
