I am going crazy. I was advised to reformat my hard drive and I have done that. Now I am stuck at the C: prompt and I do not know how to install windows and the rest of my software. When I insert the installation disk in cdrom it wont work. What have a messed up and how do I fix it. |

What operating system are you trying to use?
If it is win98, take a win98 boot disk (you have one right?), put it in the floppy drive and reboot. After the post you will be given 3 choices, pick start win98 with cd-rom support. after the drivers are finished loading, switch to the cd-rom drive, if you only have one hard drive, the cd will be e:, (d: will be the ram drive) and type; setup. |

Lord help me. I'm putting together a system for a small office. I'll try to make this as succinct as possible.
1. I put together the system and the first problem I ran into was that upon entering the BIOS, I could not navigate it with the keyboard.
2. Because the used hard drive I was using had bad sectors, I returned it to the place from which I had purchased the HD and told the tech guy about the keyboard/BIOS problem. Techguy asked me if I had a heatsink on the CPU, as that was the only time he'd ever seen a keyboard not navigate a BIOS. I traded the HD out and went to get the motherboard (1st Mainboard f/ FIC) for the tech guy to test.
3. Techguy tested the motherboard (even with my CPU--an Intel Celeron 400) and (CRIKEY!) it worked fine--BIOS navigation w/ KB was fine, that is. He concluded that I'd probably not plugged the KB into the right PS/2 connector on the MB. (I was willing to think that I'd made a stupid mistake, but it turns out that I'd been connecting the KB correctly; after testing and returning to the office, I used a second KB to try it again with no BIOS navigation problems--go figure!)
4. After "solving" the BIOS navigation problem, I fdisked and formatted the new HD with no problems. However, trying to load Win98 kept giving me "problems loading user.exe" or "packed file is corrupt" messages, even after using 3 different CDs and 3 different CD drives.
5. In the meantime I purchased a 20GB HD and installed it on my home computer, and have installed my old HD into the new system I'm speaking of.
6. Now, the new system BIOS is again not navigable with the KB!!!! Nor will Win98 (already loaded onto my old HD) recognize the PS/2 mouse. Both KB and mouse are hooked up correctly to the MB connectors.
WHAT IS GOING ON?! Is this a sign of a bad motherboard--i.e., should I exchange it?

Just a few thoughts...
Exit Setup, restart your computer, and rerun setup and select the "Safe Recovery" mode. If you receive an error at this point, it might be due to virus-protection. Some computers have virus protection built into the the ROM BIOS. Disable any virus checking in setup and then restart setup, select "Safe Recovery" mode.
The "packed file is corrupt" message usually occurs when the program you are trying to run gets loaded in the first 64K of memory. Loadfix in past versions of DOS could be used to make the adjustment. Loadfix loads a program above the first 64K of memory, and runs the program.
It doesn't ship with 98, but could still be used if you could find a copy (loadfix.com) from a prior version.
I could be shooting in the wind, since Win98 normally takes care of these kind of problems. I would guess, it's how the cdrom is being loaded in DOS mode?? Are you running setup from the DOS prompt or by the Win98 setup disk? Are there any entries in your autoexec.bat or config.sys file?

Seems this could be related to the memory area mentioned above, also.
