Once in awhile my computer will dial out all by itself. A little dial up cloud thingy will appear in upper right corner, and the modem sounds off, just as if I was trying to connect. The status box appears and says dialing, verifying username and password. I do not know if it connects? There is no computer icon in task bar. Why does it do this? I have checked my Internet connection and nothing strange appears? Any Ideas?

Ron, your machine is set up to automatically check mail or updates or something. It may also be trying to attach to the web because you have set a software package up to "Automatically connect" when necessary. It could be in your Compaq settings. If the modem is sounding as if you were dialing up your service provider, then it probably IS dialing up something. There are certain invasive programs that imbed dialups into your computer, and it could also be one of these, so watch your phone bill carefully. It could also be as simple as it is trying to dial out to a service update, either with the Windows auto update, or as I mentioned before, the Compaq service updates. Does the status box give a clue to what service provider it is trying to connect to? Try doing a ctrl-alt-del once while that status window is open. Look for any running package that may be the one currently attempting to reach the web. I read an article on this not too long ago, I will search about and see if I can find it.
