I have just put together a pc from a load of old bits I had lying around, and everything seemed to be going ok until I tried to install windows - win98 and Me crash constantly during installation, and win95 installs, but wont let any programs run without crashing. win3.1?? wont even come up on screen!!

Help??

look in the bios fearures setup to make sure virus warning is disabled
if it is set to enabled it thinks a virus is being written to the boot sector and causes installation to hang

also the best way i have found to install is to boot from a startup floppy with cd-rom (win98 startup disk provides this) support. at the c:\> prompt copy only the win98 or win95 folder from the installation cd to your fdisked and formatted harddrive. after your copy is done change to the win98 folder and run setup from there
this way is good also because from time to time you may need drivers from the cabs and having the setup image on the hardrive avoids having to use the cd whenever the need arises

hope this helps
