i've been running win98se on a dell dimension xps for a couple of years now without incident. yesterday, mostly out of boredom, i decided i needed to bullocks up the system software by adding some uninstalled components from the installer cd.
the worst part is i cant remember what i removed (to free up some sys resources) and what i added (to give me something to tinker with). im pretty sure i removed direct cable connection, dial-up atm support, dial-up networking (im on a LAN here), net meeting, ms chat, phone dialer. and i added VPN just to see what kind of trouble i could get in to. (i think that's plainly obvious at this point)
when i restarted, i could not connect via netscape (email or browser), IE6, my webcam would not connect to the ftp server, CuteFTP would not connect--basically nothing in windows would connect.
BUT--i could open up a dos window and ping any .com server i chose.
i decided i'd UNDO everything i had just added/removed. this did not work.
i then removed all the adapters, services and protocols from the network control panel and reinstalled.
that did not work.
now im thinking something got corrupt.
any ideas???....TIA |

Imagine you did but will ask anyway did you go through internet wizard after?

While it might be possible to undo all the changes you made, it might be easier to save any important files and just re-install the OS. Windows is notorious for leaving "trash" behind when things are removed, and if this system has been running for quite a while there might be quite a bit of unnecessary "crap" on the HD.
I have run into this problem a few times. Some programs - especially ones that change system settings - can do unpredictable things to a PC.
Call me lazy, but I would re-install. |
