I have windows 2000 on a laptop. I could not add a printer. When I looked in the hardware manager, I found that all of the devices were "unknown". If you looked under network adapters there were several, all with "Unknown". I could still map drives. If I tried to use the hardware wizard it would just run for a sec and quit. No errors. Any thoughts?

The first place to look is for win2k drivers or bios updates from the manufacturer, if your printer port isn't recognised by the OS you probably won't be able to load a printer. The fact that you can still map drives probably means you are running in Win2K's version of compatability mode. You have a very strange problem there for sure.....
