on boot, the win 98 screen the one with the windows logo just hangs there for over 5 mins without going anywhere or displaying any error messages, also, those little blue boxes crawl along the bottom, anybody got any ideas what is the problem? thanks..... |

Hardware conflicts can cause that problem. I have also seen virus infection cause it as well. Press F8 before the splash screen comes up and try booting in safe mode. |

But once you've booted in safe mode how do you get back to normal? Surely it's not much use having a computer that's running in safe mode. |

Safe mode allows you to undo any changes that were made which interferes with a normal boot. It also gives the opportunity to use scan disk to check for errors. The system information utility provided with win98 offers a system file checker, registry checker etc. in the tools drop down menu. All to help restore normal operation. |
