on boot, the win 98 screen the one with the windows logo just hangs there for over 5 mins without going anywhere or displaying any error messages, also, those little blue boxes crawl along the bottom, anybody got any ideas what is the problem? thanks.....

Hardware conflicts can cause that problem. I have also seen virus infection cause it as well. Press F8 before the splash screen comes up and try booting in safe mode.

But once you've booted in safe mode how do you get back to normal? Surely it's not much use having a computer that's running in safe mode.

Safe mode allows you to undo any changes that were made which interferes with a normal boot.
It also gives the opportunity to use scan disk to check for errors. The system information utility provided with win98 offers a system file checker, registry checker etc. in the tools drop down menu. All to help restore normal operation.
