Hi I have never owned a computer before, and a good friend just gave me an old one. It's a compaq 486 dx2 with 50mhz. My problem is when I
boot it up it says STARTING WINDOWS 95. Then I get an error msg stating that COMMAND.COM & STARTUP.EXE are missing or corrupted. I have tried several different recovery/restore cd's
like Norton, compaq, Macafee, ect. with no avail. I have also searched several websites & have not found anything too help out. Could someone please give me a tip on what I need to do...

still try'n to get started,
Willy

You could try booting with the startup floppydisk for your version of win95. When at the A:\> prompt type, so it looks like

A:\>sys c:

Reboot and see if windows comes up.

Edit: I neglected to mention that what this does is to copy system files from the floppydisk to the harddrive and replaces the command.com file.
