Before redoing from scratch one of my Windows 2000 machines at home, I copied my important files to another Win 2000 machine across my little ethernet network at home.

After I was finished, I'm unable to open these files. I either get a "file is in use" or "this isn't a valid Word document or path" when trying to open these files on either machine. Would anyone know why is this so? Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer any advice.

It sounds like you may have used network neighborhood to transfer your files. If that's so then all it did was to create a short cut to the files on the original computer.
If this is not so, let us know how you did the transfer.
