Has anyone experienced their computer just rebooting out of the blue? this never happened before I installed Win98. I use both Norton AV and Anti Viral Toolkit and keep it all very up to date. Someone said I needed to upgrade to the second edition of Win98, which I did and it seems worse. So far it only seems to happen when I'm online. I can be not even touching the computer and it will reboot. Any input? Thanks. |

i believe, that is, i think i saw something on this somewhere, but i'd have to check. you're using win 98se? is that correct? |

Hmm I do experience it once in a while (I also have Win98, but not SE version), but strangely it only began to happen after upgrading to a 3Dfx Voodoo3 3000 (used to have a Canopus Spectra 2500, a TNT vidcard, and a Diamond Monster 3DII, a Voodoo2). Only once in a blue moon though, whether online or not. Any suspicious hardware you might have? |

i can't seem to find it, but i think there is a patch for win98se or at least a paper on it. also, there are hardware problems that would cause this. in my case, not the rebooting, but just general hanging. as you might remember, it was the sound card. first thing would be to list any changes that you did recently. i tried win98se but found it would not run correctly with my mb. it was a hardware issue. had to uninstall it. particularly with how it accesses usb. definately a controller problem with win98se's software. until there is a hardware fix; get a new mb, i can't use win98se. |

This has been happening since I went to Win98, which was a complete clean install. It would just happen at random, I updated the MS virtual machine and libraries and everything about my performance took a big loss! this is when I decided to go to SE, especially since a friend had told me it would stop the random rebooting. I had heard horror stories about installing SE over the 1st edition, but thought what the heck since I was beginning to believe a clean install was in order. SE helped my performance problems, however not back to norm. This is when I realized the random reboot was happening much more often. Approx. 3 times a night. Meanwhile, I am now really leary of Microsofts "critical" updates. I am thinking of switching out the board to see if it is possibly hardware related. It is hard to relate to recent things done since it has actually been happening for awhile. To my knowledge...since I went to Win98. It never happened with Win95. As for more recent increased happenings...I would have to suspect the MS updates or SE. Hard to tell since SE came so soon after the bunk updates. Thanks for your help. |

Hmm okay
Well this last month I've not had a spontaneous reboot on my system at all, perhaps after doing that last update on MSIE5.0 (when I needed to gain access to a secure site at a bank). Oh ya what version of MSIE do you have? (Win98 comes with MSIE4.0, which does have a few bugs in it - especially the crash when using the browser to download from ftp:// links)

Was 4, but when I installed SE it auto installed IE5. Not an optional thing. I took a gamble and went and did the MS critical security updates which became available with the upgrade. I also did the 128 bit encrytion, which I believe is the one you did, so with any luck at all...we'll see. I have never had an update do like the last one. It almost acted like it had sprouted a major memory leak that would just keep draining until it choked. Of course there was no uninstall and I'd swear it did not update files according to the correct date when the update was done and left zip of a trail. Like I said...we'll see. Thanks for your help. |
