I am trying to install Office 2000 on Windows 98. When I insert Disk 1, it pops up a message saying "This patch package could not be opened. Etc." When I insert Disk 2, it actually starts to install and freezes. I have been on the Microsoft website and tried all of their ideas, but nothing has worked to this point. Any ideas?

Is this windows 98 FE or SE? The reason I ask is I had problems installing Office 2K on 98FE, I don't remember the error as it was over 3 years ago. I upgraded to 98SE and it installed fine. Your disk 2 might actually be the installation disk in this case and disk 1 is the updates package. Lockups when installing Office 2K usually means a program is running in the background that doesn't like Office 2K, or you need to update chipset drivers. Sorry I can't be more specific.

It is Windows 98SE. Also, I have used these two disks several other times when installing Office 2000 or installing service packs and they have worked fine.

Are you running any type of system management software such as Norton System Suite or other?

No. I have also tried disabling our Anti-Virus and halting every application except for the MOST necessary.

This is an odd problem, Big Guy, how about posting the exact error, there may be a clue in it.

Here is the exact message:

This patch package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package.

However, like I said, I have used this installation disk many times prior to this event.

According to the MSDN Library this error often occures if the installer version doesn't match the version already on the computer and is not able to update the installer version ALA corrupt windows installation. Looks like its a FDISK, format, and try again time.
