i have a compaq series laptop, the problem with it is tht i can enter the cmos and set the boot options, but i just cannot boot, i have tried booting thru a floppy but the floppy drive just doesnt work and since i had formatted the hdd i cannot boot thru that either!help

Well Michael, you have a multitude of problems with various machines Huh? What MODEL compaq is it ? Does it have a built-Compaqs default to boot from any device, so it will try each one until it either finds a bootable drive, or has tried the available drives and failed. Without a CD, you have to put the laptop HD into another machine, using a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter.

last post was cut for some reason - does it have a built-in cd ? if so, make (or buy) a bootable cd and boot from that. Or find a working floppy for your model on Ebay... Hope this makes it in one piece.
