My brother has an computer with windows 98, that often runs scandisk at the start. When this happens he gets a error message about long filenames. After that has finished, the computer has made multiple catalogs and he is very unlucky the windows catalog has been moved. This leads to that he has to install windows 98 again. Any suggestions?

When you boot, Windows runs the DOS version of Scandisk which cannot find problems with long file names, you should skip the dos scandisk each time and use the windows one as soon as you are fully booted up.

If this kinda thing continually happens, you may have a flaky hard drive or RAM.
